How to start eBay dropshipping the right way

Seller labelling a package for shipping

Dropshipping is one of the most popular ways to start on eBay because you do not need to buy stock upfront. You list a product, a buyer orders it, and your supplier ships it straight to them. Done properly, it is a low-cost way to learn the platform and build sales. Done carelessly, it is the fastest way to get an account restricted.

Know eBay’s dropshipping rule

eBay permits dropshipping when you source from a wholesale supplier. What it does not allow is buying an item from another retailer or marketplace and having that retailer ship it directly to your buyer. Build your store around genuine suppliers from day one and you remove the biggest risk.

Set the account up correctly

  • Register as a business seller if you are trading regularly.
  • Create clear shipping, returns and payment policies before you list anything.
  • Start with a small number of listings. New accounts have selling limits, and steady growth builds trust.

Choose products with real demand

Look at sold listings, not active ones. Sold data shows what buyers actually pay for. Aim for products with steady sales, room for a healthy margin after eBay fees and shipping, and suppliers who can dispatch quickly with tracking.

Protect your seller metrics

Your account health depends on shipping on time, uploading tracking promptly and keeping your defect rate low. With dropshipping you rely on a supplier for all of this, so pick suppliers who are fast and communicate well, and check stock before every order.

Write listings that rank

Use the words buyers search for in your title, fill in every relevant item specific, and use clear photos. Good listings get found; thin ones disappear.

Scale slowly, then quickly

Once orders run smoothly, add products in batches, test Promoted Listings on your best sellers and drop items that do not sell. The sellers who last are the ones who build systems before they chase volume.

Our eBay course, starting 20 October, covers this whole process step by step, from account creation to selling strategies.
