Facebook and Instagram ads for ecommerce: a starter framework

Social media apps on a smartphone

Meta ads can bring a steady stream of buyers to your store, but only if the basics are right. This framework keeps it simple.

1. Get tracking right first

Install the Meta pixel and the Conversions API, and check that add-to-cart and purchase events fire correctly. Without accurate tracking, Meta cannot find buyers and you cannot judge results.

2. Know your target

Work out your break-even return on ad spend: the revenue you need for every unit of ad spend to cover product costs, fees and the ad itself. That number tells you which campaigns to keep.

3. Use a simple structure

  • Prospecting: reach new people who have never heard of you. Broad audiences often work well once tracking is solid.
  • Retargeting: remind people who visited your site or added to cart.
  • Catalogue ads: show people the exact products they viewed.

4. Creative is the biggest lever

Test different hooks, formats and angles: short videos, product demos, customer-style clips, simple images with a clear offer. Most of the improvement in ad results comes from better creative, not settings.

5. Change one thing at a time

Give ads enough time and budget to gather data before judging them. Then move budget towards winners and switch off ads that miss your target.

6. Fix the landing page

If people click but do not buy, the problem is often the product page: price, images, delivery cost or trust. Better pages make every ad cheaper.
